Review of Gosford Park (2001) by Chelsea C — 27 Oct 2008
Far more complicated than I would have expected from Robert Altman. His films are usually hyper-active and thick with information, but most of it is useless amusement. In Gosford Park, every relationship and off-handed comment seems detrimental.
I struggled, but I loved it. The late director's technique in presenting such a hectic household so strategically is an outstanding feat. Then the performances, superbly disected no matter how seldom they're seen, really colors in the frenzy.
Extremely complex and unusually engaging, Gosford Park is a difinitive masterpiece in whodunits and period drama.
