Review of Gorky Park (1983) by Robert R — 28 Feb 2009
A great novel about the failing visage of soviet Russia is ruined by lifeless direction, zero subtlety, no underlying message, and boring wooden performances. A professor of mine worked on this film, and right before production started MGM signed William Hurt to a three film deal, hoping that this would be a success and they'd have him at a bargain for his next two big pictures.
When one of the producers was watching an early disastrous cut of the film, he walked out and said "Let's try not to waste any more money on him." Believe that he's that bad and stay away.
