Review of Goosebumps (2015) by Tom F — 16 Nov 2015
Goosebumps feels like an equal mix of Hocus Pocus and Jumanji, which is great in itself, but why doesn't it feel like Goosebumps? As far as nods to the books go, what you see in the trailer is what you get, save for a surprise or two.
The movie's premise is promising, and generally well-executed. But when monsters started showing up, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't recognize any of them. I've read every Goosebumps book from the original run, and with the exception of the monsters you see on the posters, way too many classics are left out or shoved into the background in favor of generic zombies and clowns.
I'd like to see a sequel or series of sequels that explored the books and the mythology behind the monsters, which this movie sets up perfectly. Those complaints aside, I did enjoy it for what it was, and would like to see more in the future.
