Review of Goosebumps (2015) by Johnathon W — 16 Nov 2015
Enjoyable family film that will delight fans of the books & non-fans alike. The cast is mostly solid, especially the young leads Dylan Minnette, playing a not quite sullen teenager while Odeya Rush makes for an appealing girl next door.
Jack Black is a bit hammy as R.L. Stine though still manages to deliver some laughs. Behind the camera, director Rob Letterman fills the screen with plenty of Stine's creations (fans will have fun picking out each & every one) while capturing the tone of the books; fun with the right amount of scares.
Slappy the Puppet is especially well done as the monster's leader (a smart choice considering his Stine's most popular monster) with great vocal work by Jack Black along with creepy effects (the way he instantly moves with each flash of light is especially unsettling).
Unfortunately, the CGI isn't perfect (the werewolf sticks out quite a bit) and a twist with one of the characters is never fully explored. However, this is still a fun family film with a nice mix of scares for everyone.
