Review of Goosebumps (2015) by Steven F — 23 Feb 2016
I grew up on the Goosebumps books and TV series. To this day I still remember staying up for the premier of The Werewolf of Fever Swamp. That, my friend, was the shit- and the shit it did scare out of me. R. L. Stine is the reason I fancied scary books, preparing me to later become a fan of Stephen King.
Goosebumps, staring Jack Black as R.L. Stine, was a hoot. I very much enjoyed seeing all the monsters from my childhood wreaking havoc in one movie without it seeming too crammed or overwhelming. I feel like this was a great choice for Jack Black as his character was more of a straight role. He did get to let his crazier side show, though, through voicing the infamous dummy, Slappy.
All in all, Goosebumps should be enjoyable for fans of the book/TV series. I can see those who aren't fans easily giving this a shoulder shrug. However, if you're like me you'll find it rather enjoyable. It's a wild, fast-paced ride with the help of a score composed by the talented Danny Elfman.
