Review of Goon (2012) by Tony Z — 15 Nov 2012
Goon - 2011.
This movie was something that I have been wanting to watch for a long fucking time. Ever since I heard Jay Baruchel was writing this I was hooked. Then I saw the trailer and all hands were on deck for this movie. I love Seann William Scott(SWS) as well as Liev Schreiber and once the trailer showed me how this was gonna play out I was so stoked.
And...I was not dissapointed. This.
Movie may just seem like a hockey movie about a brawler, but I tell you, the amount of heart that SWS pours into his roles is very underrated. Even if you look at Stiffler, you can tell that he is giving it his all. This movie showcased a lot of that talent that you don't see too often with SWS because he actually is like a little teddy bear in this movie that happens to be good at fighting and so he is recruited to play hockey. Almost a Lenny from "Of Mice and Men".
The devotion he portrays, as well as the heart that you can see in his eyes really got me. I just thought that this movie was going to be a funny movie...which it is...but it is actually REALLY good and tells a good story. I know that some people would probably watch this movie and say that it is very one dimentional, but I tell ya what...these are probably the same people who ragged on the Dark Knight Rises for not having more action in it. Fuckin movie snobs man.
I applaud this movie for everything it is. My only complaint is that it was short. It could have been a lot longer and I would have been alright. But it is what it is and I would watch this movie on repreat if my kids weren't always around. But it is one of those movies that you can just put in the backround and play it all day. I loved this movie. I give it 5 out of 5 Tube Thumbs Up. It's these little obscure movies that not a lot of people have ever heard of that make the good list for me...when I am let down by so many hyped peices of garbage that Hollywood drolls out and ruins for me by putting every funny scene in the fucking trailer. Goon is surely a good romantic comedy with awesome action as well as good characters...especially...Ashley and I's favorite, the Percacet laced Goalie. Loved it...check it out.
