Review of Goon (2012) by Ken C — 04 Jul 2012
It uses every sports movie cliche in the book and the jokes (although funny) are very inconsistent, but what benefits Goon the most for me is Sean William Scott's surprisingly believable performance. For years he's been playing the same screwball, perverted sidekick but here he shines through as the lead protagonist and shows a side to him that we've never seen before. He's sympathetic and you really want to see him win at the end. He works for both comedic effect and dramatic effect, and even though he may deliver his lines out of character sometimes, he still manages to pull off whatever the script is giving him.
It's not the most consistent sports movie, and it's not nearly as funny as other sports comedies like Talladega Knights, but it's got good characters, a great amount of heart, a impressive lead performance from Scott.
Recommended.
