Review of Gook (2017) by Matthew R — 23 Jul 2018
Fascinating high quality film surrounding but not including the South Central LA riots of 1992. The movie immediately begins building the characters and one finds themselves drawn into the various life related conflicts between people.
The scenes between Kamila and Eli are poignant and display the care that one person can have of another without regard to backgrounds. Generational conflicts, sibling conflicts, racial and socioeconomic status conflicts are explored quite thoroughly without dragging on.
Even through all the anger and conflict the movie expresses hope all the way to the very end when the rug gets pulled out from underneath you. A hopeful yet sad commentary on poverty is more important to the movie than the racial divides that exist at the surface.
Although not a must see for all, those interested in anthropological and social studies would find this movie right up their alley.
