Review of Goodnight Mommy (2015) by Brandon W — 16 Nov 2016
Goodnight Mommy is the directorial and writing debut of Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, and it stars Susanne West, Lukas Schwarz, and Elias Schwarz in a German horror film about twin brothers being inside the house alone, having fun, and the mother comes back to the house, and she looks, and acts different to the point that the twin brothers start to question about whether she's actually their mother.
I was looking much forward to this as the film has great reviews, and the trailer got me interested. While the movie didn't scare me necessarily, I was very creeped out by this interesting film. The acting is really great, and the way that it was shot, was really gorgeous to look at, while giving some creepy shots.
The psychological aspect of the film is really subtle and effective enough that it keeps the viewers going in the slow pace. The writing is well done, and it has a good build-up to it that leads to the last act that is hard to watch, but in a good way.
As for the twist, I found out from it from a reviewer, and to this day, I remembered what it was as it's a interesting one. The way it leads to the twist, I think I would've figured out about it when the movie is at the midway point.
The score is chilling to listen to, and it's disturbing in some moments. It does drag in some parts, but overall, Goodnight Mommy is a great film that more movies should be like this with the kind of approach that creeps you out, but still keep going that you can't help but watch.
