Review of Goodnight Mommy (2015) by Jeff D — 20 Dec 2015
Modern filmmaking of the kind Goodnight Mommy represents lives and dies by the twist, for better or worse. In Goodnight Mommy, the twist is so easily guessed in the first five minutes of the film, you spend the rest of the running length a little put off by how clever the filmmakers think they are. That doesn't save you, however, from the terror of the third act where the natural response is to turn away from the abject terror happening on the screen.
Goodnight Mommy is an example of good filmmaking and bad storytelling....or good filmmakers bending too clever by half.
