Review of GoodFellas (1990) by Seth Y — 12 Mar 2013
In my opinion, not only is "GoodFellas" Martin Scorsese's best work, but it's also the best gangster film ever made and one of cinema's finest achievements.
This movie depicts the life of organized New York City crime, following the rise and fall of Henry Hill, a kid who grows up running errands for the "wise guys" and eventually becomes part of the family once he reaches adulthood.
I cannot stress enough how good the performances in this film are. Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Paul Sorvino are all fantastic and really believable in the roles of hard-nosed mobsters. This is a brutal movie, with a lot of realistic "revenge" kills you would expect to see with this lifestyle. The dialogue is absolutely fantastic, and all around this film is simply a beautiful piece of art. Scorsese is truly a masterful filmmaker, and it shows not only here, but also with much of his other work. 5 stars.
