Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by Liz M — 15 Apr 2009
Sometimes when we most wish to be left alone, great friendship is thrust upon us. I learned the word "importunity" at a young age when I was pestering my father during a dinner party. One of the guests, a very wise teacher from his school, told me a beautiful parable from the bible about a man begging for bread from a friend in the middle of the night.
After he was surprised by flat denial, he continued with importunity, and was given bread. This was a story about how to ask God for life's necessities in prayer, but it was also a story about friendship.
Likewise "Goodbye Solo" is a story of a man asking for a friendship, and denied at first, continues with importunity. The friendship he gains is difficult, but enriches the lives of both men in ways we could never have expected.
