Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by Kath Q — 23 May 2009
Brilliant in its simplicity, and smartly measured in sentiment, this little film also manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. We don't get all the details about why William is driven to suicide. But what we do see is the beauty of kindness and decency.
Bahrani directs this film for intelligent, thoughtful audiences. There is nothing flashy or thrilling here. But what we get from him is a perfect balance of plot, character development, and cinematography. The result is a touching story told without condescension or manipulation.
Red West is amazing in a tough role with few lines. Souleyman Sy Savane is also excellent in a very emotional role that requires versatility.
Highly recommended.
