Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by Paul F — 05 Sep 2009
An intriguing character study about a bond forged between two unlikely men. Solo is an affable, eager to please cab driver who dreams of becoming a flight attendant. William is a gruff older man of few words, disenchanted with life.
The film begins with William giving Solo a hundred dollar deposit towards a thousand dollar fare, one way only to a place called Blowing Rock. We learn it is a place where at it's peak the wind will blow back anything thrown into the air.
Director Ramin Bahrani has crafted a powerful film that is anti-hollywood in it's storytelling approach. There are no neatly tied up plot points and orchestral swells to hammer home emotion. No, much like real life there is interaction, silence, mystery, not knowing everything about everybody, not knowing what life will bring from one moment to the next.
Easily one of the top 5 films I've seen thus far this year.
