Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by Tommi N — 22 Nov 2009
Solo (Souleymane Sy Savane) is an exuberant Senegalese taxi driver seemingly loving his new life in America despite marital problems and career setbacks. William (Red West) is a taciturn 70-year-old regular passenger in his cab.
When William offers Solo a generous fare to take him on a one-way trip to a local beauty spot notorious as a frequent location for suicides, Solo becomes concerned, and tries to involve himself in the old man's life.
Everything seems set up for a heartwarming but cliched story in which the lively immigrant's joie de vivre will slowly win over the sad old fellow and convince him that yes, life is wonderful after all.
It is to the credit of all concerned that what actually unfolds is something much more complex and convincing than that, and the ambiguous but beautiful ending leaves you pondering long after leaving the cinema.
