Review of Goodbye Solo (2009) by Eric N — 22 Aug 2010
I can understand why this was rated so highly and why the critics almost universally applauded it, however, I had to really work to like this film. Character study's should be engrossing; they must draw the audience in through identifying with the characters.
The pacing was quite slow, but drifted rather than moved with a deliberate stalking of the audience. I was drifting by midway, but it was well worth finishing and the time to watch. Solo and his step daughter are portrayed nearly flawlessly, but something about how William's character was written just didn't resonate with me.
