Review of Good Will Hunting (1997) by Anthony I — 19 Sep 2015
I'm late to the party on seeing this. I liked it more than I thought I would. I've seen the movie referenced and spoofed many times, so I thought my view would be a little jaded. Yet, the story it tells is still unique, sweet and fascinating.
It sort of reminded me of Ordinary People, which focused on a therapist/boy relationship. It's a wonderful script. One of the smartest ones ever written. The performances are spectacular, even after so many years.
Yes, I wholeheartedly agree, this is the best performance of Robin William's career. This was one of the few time when award season truly got it right. He is magnificent here. I adored his character.
Hindsight really helps, however. You can unfortunately see the dark, devastated side of Robin that lurked beneath his hilarious exterior showing itself throughout this performance. This is what depression looks like.
This was, in fact, the real Robin Williams, and we lost him because of it. If you thought Good Will Hunting was sad then, it's even sadder now. Still, you'd be stupid not to watch it at least once.
