Review of Good Will Hunting (1997) by Tommy 'See The Treasure' S — 26 Nov 2013
'This here! It's not your fault,' says the psychiatrist(an extraordinarily hairy Robin Williams), holding a file that contains Will Hunting's(Matt Damon) tortured past.
'Yeah. I know that,' answers Will coolly. He is one cool customer.
'Look at me son. It's not your fault,' repeats Rob for emphasis.
'I know,' shrugs Will, but does he REALLY know? Does he? HARDLY! So Rob declares a third time:
'It's not your fault,' Wow! It's like.. the more he says it, the truer it gets.
Will's having none of it. He's one tough cookie.
'I know,' he smirks. His smirk conceals his profound, intellectual sorrow(a very Oscar-worthy variety of sorrow).
'It's not your fault,' repeats Rob meaningfully.
Will begins to shift with unease. His body language seems to say: 'Please desist from saying that. I am very uncomfortable with these proceedings,'.
But it is necessary to say it again, reckons Rob.
'It's not your fault.' He's a persistent chap, this psychiatrist fellow.
Will is by now deeply perturbed. His lips are quivering. His eyes are wet.
'Don't fuck with me,' he whimpers helplessly.
But Rob is merciless. He proceeds to say 'It's not your fault' a few more times, until eventually Will bursts into tears.
Success! The impenetrable genius has been cracked. Rob takes him in his hairy embrace. They weep and hug away the pain.
In the last shot of this highly emotional scene, a glint of triumph appears in Rob's eyes. It's as though he is already thinking: 'I am definitely gonna win an Oscar for this.'.
