Review of Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) by Neil S — 09 Feb 2009
It's amazing that film about a huge event in television could end up seeming like it should have been a stage play. Although it is handled competently enough, and looked very stylish, I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd be better off watching a documentary using all the original footage rather than watching an actor imitate it.
It's very worthy material but somehow it seems like an inappropriate medium to tell the story, and all the questions about the worth of television as a medium were raised better by Network about 30 years before...
It would be interesting to see if someone made a film from a more sympathetic view of McCarthy. Exploring his motivations would be something much more satisfying intellectually than something which mostly says McCarthy was bad and repeats the original arguments against him at the time.
