Review of Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) by Greg L — 22 Aug 2009
It's earnest and well-meaning and has its heart in the right place and all that, but it just didn't grab me. The performances are good, insofar as they capture the tics and mannerisms of 50's era public speaking, but they don't really do much to illuminate the personalities of the people involved.
The black and white cinematography and meticulous set design integrate nicely with the authentic period television footage, but the direction on the whole is too stage-y and talky, with a bit of an educational film feel to it.
While it's worth seeing, that eat-your-vegetables quality ultimately makes it much more effective as a civics lesson than as a piece of cinema.
