Review of Good Night, and Good Luck. (2005) by Jacob G — 20 Nov 2009
They're not supposed to make films like this--movies that make me feel like I'm actually in the era, working alongside men in the newsroom and wondering if this will be the day that the **** hits the fan with advertisers, viewers, or politicians.
I don't know a lot about Edward Murrow, but the way he's portrayed by David Strathairn is haunting and beautiful. His glare that is at one moment emotionless, is betrayed be the nervous twitch and a quick shifting of his eyes.
Clooney is almost always great and this film is no exception. The rest of the cast is quite good (Robert Downy Jr. excepted, oddly enough). The only downside to the movie is a slightly anti-climatic ending (it makes sense.
.. but I think they could have done more with it) and some oddly pointless scenes without dialog. Dialog-less scenes can work well, but generally require some great character moments. These don't have that and instead come across as time filler.
While visually artistic, their occurrences interrupt the flow and tension of the movie. Without those stumble's, Good Night and Good Luck would have easily gained another half a star or more.
