Review of Good Kill (2015) by Quincy T — 28 Apr 2015
This is one of my favorite directors, and there is a lot to recommend this film (It's beautifully shot and brilliantly acted) but it's a story that's been done too much before. The message, essentially, is that war is horrible and messes up the minds and the lives of soldiers. And that's really a shame because it's such a tired cliche movie message. We're not seeing anything new here. I like the exploration of the drones concept, but the downward spiral of Hawke's character is so mind-numbingly boring that the only message the audience will perceive is "Andrew Niccol is a crap writer." But it's not true. He's actually brilliant.
***Making a film about boredom and mental torture will inevitably bore and mentally torture your audience.
