Review of Good Kill (2015) by Andrew M — 17 May 2015
"Good Kill" has a lot of good filmmaking. I think it's interesting to make a film about drones and make a point of using them to film exteriors - that's pretty cool. There are very good performances in the film, especially the scenes between Ethan Hawke and Bruce Greenwood (Bruce Greenwood really needs to work more - such a solid actor).
The story was good and revealed an aspect of the war on terror that I knew very little about, so that's cool, too. My issue with the film, however, overshadowed my enjoyment. The filmmakers had an obvious point of view and were willing to beat the audience over the head with it even if it took the audience out of the story.
The audience wasn't allowed to watch a story then consider how they feel about the use of drones ... we were informed that they're evil Evil EVIL to a point where the film felt more like propaganda than entertainment.
It's a shame because I think the POV issues will overshadow the good performances.
