Review of Good Hair (2009) by Mark R — 02 Mar 2010
Chris Rock channels Michael Moore for this documentary about African-American hair. Since I'm white and male, and spend maybe 30 seconds a day working on my hair, it was rather startling to realize just what a huge business hair is, and black hair in particular.
Rock proves to be an entertaining guide through the world of hair products (some of which can burn the scalp), hair weaves (many of which costs well over $1000), and the amazingly lucrative market for human hair, most of which is harvested from India.
It all climaxes at a hair show, whose acts seem to demonstrate what would happen if Cirque du Soleil opened a salon. None of it is certainly all that substantive, but I had surprisingly good time learning about a subject that I wouldn't think I'd ever have any interest in.
