Review of Good Hair (2009) by Van R — 23 Mar 2010
This insightful documentary about black women and their coiffure is truly as incredible as well as entertaining. Narrator/host Chris Rock takes us through the black hair care industry from the sacrifices that black women make to have the perfect look to distant Indian where women have their heads shaved so they can provide African-American women with a source of hair.
Whether they are straightening or 'relaxing' their hair with chemicals that could make you go blind or having weaves sewn into their scalp, there is enough information to make your hair stand up.
Rock conducts a series of interviews with Kerry Washington, Eve, Meagan Good, Sarah Jones, Nia Long, Raven-Symoné, Maya Angelou and various guys, among them Ice-T and Al Sharpton. The bottom line is that black women don't want you to touch their hair which may have cost them as much as the down payment on a car.
The weave industry, for example, is a $9-billion dollar industry. If a black woman's hair is her glory, "Good Hair" is a celebration of that glory and the unbelievable lengths that these women will go to obtain 'good hair.
' You will never look at a black woman again in the same way after you've seen this educational epic. Rock's comic persona makes this 95 minute opus palatable.
