Review of Good Hair (2009) by Quint V — 31 Aug 2010
Chris Rock takes a stab at making a documentary aboutâ?¦hairstyles! Focusing primarily on black people and how hair fashions can take over the lives of some people, some will surely get a rise out of Rock and his ability to entertain his audience, even as the writer (he was one of three) of and head star of a documentary.
This documentary is done surprisingly well as Rock travels many places and interviews countless people obsessed with having their hair perfect. Surprisingly, some people are willing to fork out hundreds to thousands of dollars for certain hair treatments. Even some people with hardly any income at all see no harm in buying wigs or other hair supplements so their hair can look absolutely stunning.
Rock has his own share of screen time, mostly making fun of these people at how they treat their hair like their baby, but his criticisms are backed up with strong evidence that having good hair can mean the world to certain people. He has many celebrities lined up to talk about their hair (againâ?¦mostly black women including Nia Long and Raven-Symone) who all say that having perfect hair is the key to obtaining every desire they set out for.
Overall, the film is quite entertaining and delivers its share of punch. One of the most intriguing segments comes towards the end when a hair-modeling contest is show almost in its entirety and shows how far some people will go to achieve the ultimate good hair. And with heavy competition, the winner clearly stands out as the most hair-obsessed man (yesâ?¦itâ??s a man!) who puts his hair as his foremost priority.
Rock has a long ways to go before measuring up to Michael Moore standards, but he does manage to put on a good show, even in a documentary.
