Review of Good Hair (2009) by Anahita S — 24 Sep 2010
If you think this documentary is about hair, you are wrong - it's about hair as a bi-product of continued racial & cultural oppression. It was interesting and eye-opening. I wouldn't say this documentary was educational in any way - I didn't learn anything I didn't already know.
I was expecting it to be hilarious because when you think Chris Rock, you think comedy - but no, this documentary wasn't funny at all. This is one of those "you have to read between the lines" documentaries.
It's actually pretty sad that society/media outlets have dictated that black hair isn't good enough. To basically poor acid-like substances on your scalp and risk being blinded, sit there for 6 hours, pay thousands of dollars just to look less black is pretty tragic if you ask me.
That black women are willing to go through so much hell because they can't accept their ethnic roots is disturbing. And it's even more disturbing that they do it to their 3 year olds.
