Review of Good Dick (2008) by Tyrone H — 12 Mar 2011
I watched this film on false pretenses, fooled by an inappropriate trailer that made this seem like a slightly quirky funny rom-com, an impression re-inforced by a name worthy of a Farally bros movie.
That said I enjoyed this unconventional anti-rom com. Its main characters are both deeply damaged by their pasts, which refreshingly, remain largely a mystery with only the true events being hinted at. Both leads do a great job of portraying their various nurotic disorders. Her obssession with and revulsion with sex and his addictive personality.
The score is either something that will drive you to distraction or you are going to love and want to buy it. I was the later.
The main characters were largely well drawn but the others were rather peripheral and aprt from two times where the reveal something of the characters backgrounds, surpluss to requirements.
I failed to mark this little indie flick better becuse I felt that there was a significant flaw in the development of the two main characters. Woman (she is never named) does travel beyond her past and finishes the movie embarking on a new life, because of the ministrations of Man. However, Man, has simply exchanged an addiction to her, for the other addictions he has had in the past. In any sequel Woman would have to leave Man as she continues to grow and heal past damage.
