Review of Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) by Cherrytea J — 22 Mar 2008
"The country my mother left behind was a country she believed in; a country we kept alive till her last breath; a country that never existed in that form; a country that, in my memory, I will always associate with my mother.".
Becker uses incredibly all the aspects of cinema. The lights and colors, leaving us a enormous feeling of nostalgia. The genius soundtrack, by Yann Tiersen, giving texture, atmosphere to the story. The quotes with wit irony and memorable moments like his sister giving up her studies to work as Burger King attendant and the look upon his mother's face once she notices the Coca-Cola outdoor.
Goodbye, Lenin! starts as a political movie, but it's actually a movie about devotion. Devotion of Alex of to his mother, the devotion of his mother do the communist party, devotion to what they loved, to values, ideals. The mix of little things, of trivial things of life and the big, world changing things. It's the combination of politic background, personal drama, romance and comedy that makes this movie so touching. Can't tell if it's a masterpiece, but it is definitely one of the best movies of our time, and certainly a must watching.
