Review of Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) by Kane T — 15 Jun 2008
Profound film about holding on to an Old World not because you love it or need it, but because when the New World moves on without you, it's all you have. Like a less fairy tale-ish version of LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, this film portrays a touching story of a loving son who creates a tapestry of lies to keep his mother safe from the shock of the New World of post-unification Germany.
Unlike LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, it's a realistic portrayal of the son's search for any traces of the pre-unification Germany supposedly to protect his mother but maybe as a way for him to come to terms of the new society that he lives in.
