Review of Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) by Jonathan A — 11 Aug 2009
During the fall of the Berlin Wall, a young man's radically socialist mother slips into a coma and wakes up during the aftermath. Not wanting to upset her in what could be the last weeks of her life, he goes to extraordinary lengths to hide from her the truth of a changed society while struggling with westernization.
An interesting, touching and rather funny film that offers some very interesting social commentary towards the events of Germany immediately before the reunification. Rounding out the witty script are some fine performances and direction that at times amusingly parodies the styles of Scorsese and Kubrick to help promulgate the storyline.
Definitely worthy of interest to those looking for a funny film that complements rather than insults your intelligence.
