Review of Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) by Jennifer A — 21 Jan 2010
Resurrecting the wall.
Good Bye, Lenin! (2004) - 6.2/10.
Director - Wolfgang Becker.
Cast - Daniel Bruhl, Katrin Sass, Chulpan Khamatova, Maria Simon, Florian Lukas, Alexander Beyer.
Alex (Daniel Bruhl) is a dedicated and loving son. When his mother Christiane (Katrin Sass) suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma for nearly a year he is determined to protect and comfort her when she awakes. However this won't be easy as Christiane was a dedicated member of the socialist party and during her coma the Berlin Wall came tumbking down. So Alex creates a charade where East Germany stands proud.
"Good Bye, Lenin" is an interesting film. It's funny and perceptive, balancing human drama with political drama. . Daniel Bruhl and Katrin Sass are both very good. Unfortunately the film can't quite sustain itself as the premise begins to where thin by the third act. In other words this was a film that needed a definite shift. Instead the conclusion was less than satisfying which somewhat tarnsishes an otherwise solid film.
