Review of Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) by Mohamed F — 22 Jul 2010
A very beautiful dramedy about a young man juggling to keep his mother from knowing about the fall of the Berlin wall while she was in a coma, lest she'd suffer from a fatal heart attack so he recreates everything about the GDR for her so she won't find out.
The movie is emotionally charged, especially during the 3rd act, it was very well written and the balance between drama and comedy was just fine and neither overwhelmed the other.
Soundtrack by Yann Tiersen was very similar to the one he composed for Amelie, and even they shared a certain track, dunno it that was the director's choice or it was Yann's, but it was definitely not in favor of the latter, and actually the music fit Amelie more.
Overall, it's a very beautiful piece of cinema, highly recommended for fans of the genre, though it gets mighty heartbreaking at time, and the ending left me in tears.
