Review of Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) by Mark J — 16 Jan 2013
This quirky German film puts a more positive spin on the lives of East German citizens just before and after the wall came down. It focuses on Alex, as he attempts to re-create the 'spirit' of the old east Germany for his beloved mother as she comes out of a coma.
He doesn't want her to experience the shock of knowing the old order has been swept away. He fears it will be too much for her, and goes to any length to keep up the pretence that everything is 'normal' in the good old GDR.
A light-hearted comedy with some clever satire, Good-bye Lenin! is something of a counter balance to the usual grim view of life in the East (e.g. The Lives of Others).
