Review of Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (2008) by Jd T — 18 Jul 2008
A decent documentary about Hunter S. Thompson, a true American icon in letters and a true visionary. The only reason it is not a complete masterpiece is that the film uses alot of stock footage, and footage from "Breakfast with Hunter", which is actually a far superior documentary.
Johnny Depp produced this film, and as a huge Hunter fan, I'm glad to see some Hollywood bigwigs using their might for good. Still, "Breakfast with Hunter" is a way better documentary, as it is narration free and lets Hunter write his own story with his own actions, which is how he would want it, I think.
Anyway, in this day and age, Hunter's writing is more valuable than ever, and any effort to make it more mainstream is admirable. If you are a novice Hunter fan, see this film. It just might turn you into an enormous Hunter fan.
Your next move is to read his books. Then see "Breakfast with Hunter", which is basically the definitive Hunter documentary.
