At two hours, it's a big, sprawling document, sometimes as unseemly as its subject's own ego, but driven by a desire to pay full and proper homage to a personal hero of Gibney's; clearly, Thompson's activism - his mix of scepticism and idealism - would appeal to a documentarist.

Where the film scores is in the richness of its archive footage, sometimes previously unseen, always vivid, and in keeping close at hand the felicitous phrases that point us, once more, back to Thompson's fevered, electrifying prose style.
