Review of Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (2008) by Zack B — 11 Nov 2010
"No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun â" for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax â" This won't hurt.".
- Hunter S. Thompson (Suicide Note as published by Rolling Stone).
Hunter's body of work is in the top tier of most vital work ever written in my lifetime and like all his many fans, I miss him very much.
This movie is a quite deep "look" at the man ... not his work .... which I wouldn't normally take... as he was quite paricular about who & how his story was told ... but I know he & Johnny Depp, as well as Ralph Steadman & many others involved in this documentary were his real friends, like for real, & they would not have been on board if they thought this was going to be a lousy treatment.
I think I missed this in 2007 on purpose as I was going through a lot of my own stuff, big stuff, at the time & Hunter being a very important person in my life, I don't think I was ready to retrospect his life. Accept that he was gone with the rest. My Dog. My Brother. My favorite writer. All within a a year. This was my go to guy. When I wanted to feel smart, when I wanted to laugh, when I didn't want to feel alone, when I wanted to hope for something, I would research and see if he was writing a new book.
Anyone alive today who can read needs to read.
Generation of Swine-Tales of Shame & Degradation in the 80's.
I'm not going to tell you what it's about.
If you're my age and you don't read it you're an idiot and need to shut the fuck up about most things & if you're half my age you should read it. It will help you understand not just the how but the why as well ... "things" are the way they are today.
Dubz.
The empire is vast. There is no rebellion.
