Review of Gone with the Wind (1939) by Frances H — 08 Oct 2012
How anybody can rate this romantic melodramatic mess a 5 star movie is beyond me. Scarlet turns from spoiled brat to mean bitch, back to spoiled brat. She has absolutely no redeeming qualities. In fact the only character who has any is Melanie, who is sugary nice to weak wimp. All of the characters vacillate so much that one needs a compass to keep track of them, except for Mammy, played by the great actress Hattie McDaniel. If only she had had the choice of roles with variety that were available to, say, Shirley MacLaine, which was not possible in 1939.
To call this the best American movie is an insult to truly great films, such as To Kill a Mockingbird, or Citizen Cane. The picture ends with the profound thought that "Tomorrow is another day," and by that time is certainly hoped so!
