Review of Gone with the Wind (1939) by Kevin R — 26 Feb 2013
You're a heartless creature but that's part of your charm.
Scarlett is a southern bell that is very set in her ways and well known for being stubborn. When she doesn't land the man of her dreams she heads in a tailspin marrying a soldier. As the Civil War impacts the south, she finds herself moving around while trying to maintain her family's fortune. A southern playboy, Red, is hot on her trail but Scarlett leads him along but keeps him at an arms length. As people come and go, Scarlett gets closer and closer to Red; however, she treats him poorly. Will her behavior catch up to her or will Red be able to break Scarlett out of her mold?
"Has he asked you to marry him?".
"No.".
"And he won't.".
Victor Fleming, director of The Wizard of Oz, Captain Courageous, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941), Joan of Arc (1948), Treasure Island, and The Virginian, delivers Gone with the Wind. The storyline for this picture is amazing. The characters are very powerful and unpredictable and the acting was amazing. The cast includes Clarke Gable, Vivien Leigh, Thomas Mitchell, Barbara O'Neil, and Fred Crane.
"All we have is cotton, and slaves, and arrogance.".
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) recently aired this picture in preparation for the Oscars. I have seen this movie hundreds of times and was excited to watch it again. Vivien Leigh was so good in this movie and the script was brilliant. This is a must see movie and is definitely worth having in your DVD collection.
"You'll never mean anything but misery to any man.".
Grade: A.
