Review of Gone Girl (2014) by Kyle C — 25 Jun 2016
Well this one, regardless if it is good or not, is going to win a ton of come awards season. This is going to be a fairly long review because I'm still thinking about it as I right this so please bare with me.
This was something else, a real thinker you might say, but is it a good thinker. First of all let me start off with the acting. Ben Affleck is not someone I can usually sit through, to me he's very monotone most of the time and sometimes seems like he doesn't care, but here he gives it his all and is quite effective, and I think he is in about 90% of this, there aren't many scenes that he is not in.
Rosamund Pike as his wife is very good, she's the bitch that everyone likes married to the nice guy who everyone hates and her emotions are brought out very well. Even the supporting cast is quite good, Carrie Coon as Affleck's twin sister Margo and Tyler Perry as Affleck's lawyer Tanner Bolt, hell even Neil Patrick Harris is good in the few scenes he's in, and Missi Pyle as he Nancy Grace type news anchor, hey everyone likes Nancy Grace right? ;P.
For me though, the strongest performance is by Kim Dickens as Detective Boney, she is very, very strong in this and plays a very tough and smart female cop. The atmosphere in this is quite chilling and cold.
And as for the story, it's dark, mysterious, sometimes sad, and very suspenseful, you really don't have any idea how this is going to end, unless you've read the book of course, but I'm sure even that is different, it always is.
It even gets a little depressing at a few points as we see Affleck just trying to clear his name, and make everyone side with him but no matter what he does, everyone just hates him. Even if you are not a fan of these types of movies I would still say go see it because it is definitely worth the watch just to try and figure out what is going to happen and for all of the strong performances HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and one of the better movies in a very long time.
