Ben Affleck's wife goes missing and everyone thinks he's got something to do with it. Cynically the media start presuming Affleck's guilt and as the journey unfolds you start to wonder yourself.

A commentary on modern marriage perhaps or a dig at the media in missing person cases maybe. Gone Girl is enthralling for the first hour. Really well acted by Affleck and Pike and Fincher doesn't disappoint in his use of suspense.

However, and there is a big but coming. The way the story unfolds is not only implausible but almost ludicrous. Discreet veils are drawn over several unanswered questions. Questions that would be asked and answered in the normal world. Here however they deal with it in one scene where everyone resides not to do anything about it.

It seems as if the expected ending couldn't be used simply for that reason, that you'd expect it and trying to be clever is better. Instead you're just left thinking "hang on a minute!" It's a shame because Gone Girl really started developing into a cracking drama, it just lets itself down massively at the end.
