Some movies fall short of the book versions, and - very rarely - some movies exceed the books that inspired them. This one? About the same, honestly. Gripping for the first third, electrifying for the middle third and crippled by its implausibility over the last third.
Fincher nailed the tone perfectly, though, and that certainly did not hurt. Pike nailed it too...you almost forgot how ridiculous the character was.
