Review of Gone Baby Gone (2007) by Dmitri K — 08 Dec 2011
I am left feeling thoughtful after this movie. Remarkable performances are noted with Ed Harris, Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman and Michelle Monaghan handling their roles with remarkable skill. But, the exceptional is in was Amy Ryan's portrayal of the grieving Helena McCready.
Helena, when considered on paper, is a complex role that was projected "beautifully" onscreen. Quotation marks are necessary b/c this movie does not aim to present a black-and-white melodrama, opting for a more intimate approach.
That was my initial observation, until the action started to detract from the "grounded" nature of this movie, propelling it to an atmosphere of the grandiose and sadly, extreme. The flaw can be summarized in this question: Could this story have been successfully presented without the bang, bang, bang?
