Review of Gone Baby Gone (2007) by Kenneth B — 10 Nov 2012
Ben Affleck seems to be the recipient of an awful lot of critical praise for his directorial work thus far. Both Gone Baby Gone and The Town are solid if not stellar pieces of work which show promise but it does seem as though the general reaction has been excessively positive.
Gone Baby Gone is a thriller which, due to its characterisation and subject matter, is barely enjoyable. That in itself isn't necessarily a problem but in order to justify the grittiness there needs to be more of a solid message behind it all or at least a pay off.
There isn't really either. The moralistic ending feels tacked on to justify the rather fantastic twist the precedes it. Gone Baby Gone is a flawed film but if we are all jumping on the Affleck bandwagon, yes it is well directed, and hopefully in time he will justify the kudos.
