Review of Gone (2012) by Jay B — 01 May 2013
Clearly I have a different opinion of this film than the other alleged movie reviewers such as Rex Reed etc.
It's a great thrill ride, not perfect, but then does everyone expect perfection from films? I don't think I do.
Amanda is Jill, still suffering the effects of an abduction that she survived against all odds. Her sister and others appear to have very little patience for her.
When her sister disappears then the police treat her as a crank, Jill takes matters into her own hands. The police are portrayed, perhaps unfairly, as crude and unsympathetic and I found myself railing against their inability to do their jobs and be at least a little objective. They are flawed humans who barely seem professional, in other words like some real life RCMP and other police officers!
She does a credible job of tracking the evidence, dodging the police though she has trouble coming up with believable stories or lies at the drop of a hat. Finally she tracks down the killer, gets caught by him (believable) but ultimately overpowers him and then executes him. I've not really seen the Charles Bronson films nor the Dirty Harry films but this film gives us a likable character who responds to indifference by taking action. It's an action film that gives us a powerful female character who is more human and relatable to than Lara Croft or many "female heroes".
Another notch in the belt for the fabulous Amanda Seyfried! 10/10.
