Review of Gone (2012) by Winston S — 18 Aug 2012
The nasty reviews Gone has received tell more about the reviewers than the movie. Gone is a movie no one takes seriously, about a girl no one takes seriously, staring and actress no one takes seriously. All three counts are wrong. Directors who cast Amanda Seyfried know her strengths, eyes impossibly feline, eyes so large it seems they can't close. She's seldom seen sleeping. She's a pretty girl reliably cast as a victim/hunter, ever vigilant, unable to rest until her nemesis no longer threatens her or those she loves. To lure him, she must appear weak, but not so weak that her hunter loses interest, interest in a game that to him, appears as seduction And then she strikes.
Well, OK, "Gone" is admittedly not Oscar food, but good grief, the savage reviews assume Amanda is trying and failing to be the next Anne Hathaway. She's not. She'll never star opposite Jonah Hills in a romantic comedy, and will most often be cast as a woman with a lot on her mind. She's very good at this, and the results are usually quite watchable.
