Review of Gomorrah (2008) by Vincent B — 16 Nov 2009
A little slow moving, but when it does get moving it is great. There were several story lines that were intertwined. These stories were a bit hard to follow as the film progressed, but by the end I felt like I really got it all.
It was gritty and not anything like the typical mafia movie we are familiar with. In my opinion, The Godfather pt. 1 and 2, and Goodfellas were way better, but this was still a great but over-hyped film.
The acting was amazing, the directing was very good (for the most part). It seemed to have the documentary style, but every once in a while a super cinematic shot would occur. Though I thought these shots were some of the best parts, they didn't feel consistent.
Also, you couldn't really become emotionally attached to any character, which was a fantastic effect for the film, but inversely it made it hard for me to really care also, aside the fact that some of these endured events were just horrible for it to happen to anyone.
Totally worth a look, though I would not hail it as a masterpiece.
