Review of Gomorrah (2008) by Josh S — 25 Mar 2010
Crash with gangsters is what I originally thought of this film. At first I was wondering why the film had such a violent opening, yet a really slow middle. But the thing is, I couldn't stop watching it. I was wondering where this film was going until it suddenly became horribly violent.
Mixing elements of such network narrative films like Crash and Babel, along with the style and grit of City of God, you will see the basic compositions of Gomorra. It is a few stories on how crime is run in Neapolitan Italy. Instead of having the New York-style hitmen popularized in Scorcese films, here we have younger people trying to made do with Camorra. There are five stories told and each has their own outcome, mainly showing that crime does pay, but only if you're the big guy.
Like I said, the middle of this film is very slow and slightly confusing at times, but once it's over everything is pieced together. It was a very brutal and realistic film.
