Review of Goldfinger (1964) by Reece L — 22 Nov 2015
For the most part, the Bond series seems to have retained its reverential status purely due to the power of nostalgia, the string of moderately enjoyable b-movies predicted upon some pretty serious sexism and racism falling short of their reputation pretty consistently given further scrutiny.
Goldfinger is not one of those cases, a strong entry to the series and a thoroughly enjoyable piece of silly filmmaking with strong action sequences, completely ridiculous villains and Bond girls, and a director more competent than the one who helmed most of the early entries.
Some of the problems inherent to the franchise are still here, and it's too long (as most of these movies are), but for the most part, Goldfinger earns its status as one of the absolutely best (the gold-standard, if you will) of the Bond outings.
