Review of Goldfinger (1964) by Zbigniew Z — 27 Dec 2011
Sean Connery need only smoulder at the camera and there he is: Bond, James Bond. Goldfinger, indeed with the entire Bond franchise, belongs in that realm of film known as sheer entertainment. The script is campy, the situations ludicrous, and the character development null - but who needs anything loftier from a Bond film? Everything from the premise to the score oozes with that kitsch-y delight that has been mimicked and lampooned after Goldfinger.
As an action film, this one carries its audience through with much titillation (no pun intended). Didn't earn an extra half, because no matter how much silly fun it's supposed to be, I still just don't get why Goldfinger doesn't kill Bond immediately.
I know, I know - classic spy movie villain, yada yada yada, but this is only one of several plot points that had me going "But WHY?!" Didn't earn the other half of the fourth star for me only because of its occasional, brazen sexism and racial caricatures.
